In the city that never sleeps, it’s only fitting that there’s a hardware store that never closes.
Welcome to Nuthouse Hardware in Kips Bay. Nuthouse is a unique retailer catering to the inspired nocturnal creative as well as the daytime shopper in search of cleaning supplies or a shower rod for the guest bathroom. Exploring Nuthouse’s four stories is a true shopping adventure. Start your exploration on the first floor, affectionately called the dragon’s lair. Its nine aisles of floor-to-ceiling shelves are stocked with just about every hardware item you can imagine. Move upstairs if it’s housewares you’re after. Here you’ll find home décor, cooking/baking gadgets, home-organization items, window treatments, and more. Hit the fourth floor for power tools, hand tools, and art supplies, among thousands of other items.
With such a vast inventory and round-the-clock hours, the store caters to everyone from commercial contractors to newly relocated medical students fixing up their New York apartments. The store also is heavily trafficked by students from the nearby School of Visual Arts on the hunt for, well, just about anything.
“The really cool thing about Nuthouse is that we’ve filled the place with a crazy amount of inventory,” said Noy Har-Shemesh, marketing manager. “We have everything for the DIYer and the contractor.”
Siblings Marcus and Shana Sakow own the store, situated on East 29th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues. Already in the construction business, the pair became hardware retailers 15 years ago. Among the amazing array of merchandise they sell is a wide selection of quality paints, including Pratt & Lambert products, which resonate with the predominantly twenty-something residents who live in the surrounding Kips Bay and Murray Hill neighborhoods.
“It’s a one-stop shop,” Har-Shemesh said. “If you need to fix or design anything, it’s here.”
Stop by this gem to pick up the items on your shopping list (at 3 in the morning—just because you can).
